The Gift of Presence: Supporting Your Nervous System Through Holiday Gatherings

Family and social celebrations define the Chrismas / holiday season.  They can also be stressful on both our mental state and physical body.   As a result, we wanted to explain how your nervous system health plays a vital role in helping you stay present, energized, and genuinely joyful during your holiday connections.

The Stress-Body Connection

When we anticipate holiday gatherings – whether excitement or anxiety – our nervous system responds.  This response may affect muscle tension, digestion, energy levels, and even our ability to engage authentically with loved ones. Understanding this connection will empower you to support your body through the season’s social demands.

Set Your System Up for Success

The hours before a gathering matter more than we realize. Consider these nervous system-supporting practices:

  • Pre-event: Schedule a chiropractic seesion so as to optimize spinal alignment and nervous system communication. When your spine moves freely and your nerves communicate clearly, your body handles stress more effectively.  A massage can help balance muscles and decrease stress.
  • Two hours before your event: Practice deep breathing exercises. Box breathing (inhale 4 counts, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4) activates your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a state of calm alertness.
  • Hydration timing: Maintain steady hydration throughout the day rather than consuming excessive liquids right before events. Proper hydration supports nerve signal transmission and helps your body regulate stress responses.

Stay Grounded during the Celebration

Social events often mean prolonged positions (sitting, standing in one spot) or unusual postures during conversations and activities. These tips help protect your spine and nervous system:

  • Posture awareness: When seated at dinner tables, sit fully back in your chair with both feet flat on the floor. This position supports natural spinal curves and reduces nerve compression.
  • Movement breaks: Excuse yourself periodically to walk briefly – even a two-minute loop helps reset muscle tension and improve circulation.
  • Mindful alcohol consumption: Alcohol affects nervous system function and coordination. Alternate alcoholic beverages with water to maintain better body awareness and spinal stability.

Travel Wellness

Holiday travel adds another layer of physical stress. Whether driving long distances or flying to see family:

  • Schedule a pre-travel adjustment to prepare your body.
  • Use proper lumbar support during extended sitting.
  • Take movement breaks every 90 minutes.
  • Perform gentle stretches before and after travel.

Post-Celebration Recovery

After gathering-intense weekends, your body needs support to process the physical and emotional demands. A post-holiday adjustment can help release accumulated tension, restore alignment, and reset your nervous system for optimal function.  We are open between Christmas and New Years Eve and appointments are filling up quickly.

Embracing Connection Through Wellness

The holidays are about connection – with family, friends, and ourselves. When your nervous system functions optimally through proper spinal care, you’re better equipped to be fully present in these precious moments. That’s the greatest gift you can give yourself and your loved ones.
